The difference between a correction subscription and hardware support

When a rover stops getting a fix, everyone on site wants the same thing: get it working, now. The crew is standing around, the excavator is waiting, and nobody cares whose fault it is — they care that it’s fixed.
So the technician comes out, works through the gear, sorts out the problem, loads a correction subscription onto the unit, and everything works. Good outcome. The crew is moving again.
But there’s one question that rarely gets asked afterwards, and it’s worth asking: what actually fixed it?
Because two things changed in that visit. A fault got fixed, and a subscription got swapped. Only one of them was tested — and whichever one gets the credit ends up shaping what you buy next.
They’re two different things
A correction subscription is a data stream. Your receiver connects to a network over the internet and gets the correction data it needs to work at survey accuracy. That’s it. It’s a feed.
Hardware support is everything else — the receiver, the firmware, the tablet, the data collector, the SIM and comms, the software configuration, the machine-control setup. It’s the equipment that consumes the feed.
When positioning fails, the fault can sit on either side of that line. Firmware after an update. A SIM that’s dropped out. A config setting that changed. A comms issue. An expired login. Or, yes, sometimes a problem with the correction service itself.
The trouble is these two things are usually sold together, on one quote, by one rep, and renewed on one invoice. So when something breaks, they blur into a single thing in most people’s minds — and the diagnosis gets murky.
The worst time to weigh up a diagnosis
Here’s the uncomfortable part, and we’ll try to say it fairly.
When your gear is down, you’re in the weakest possible position to question what you’re told. The crew is standing around. The program is slipping. You need it working now, and you’re not the expert — that’s exactly why you called one.
And the expert who turns up is a good technician doing their job. But it’s worth being clear-eyed about one thing: the person diagnosing the problem also sells one of the possible fixes. If the finding is “your correction service is no good,” the remedy happens to be on their price list.
That doesn’t make anyone dishonest. Most technicians are decent people who want you back up and running. But diagnosis tends to follow the toolbox. When two things changed in one visit — a fault fixed and a subscription swapped — the story that survives is the one that was told, not the one that was tested.
It sounds like the real problem is that in that moment, you have no way to tell the difference. So here’s how you tell the difference.
Three questions to ask before you accept “it’s the corrections”
1. “What was the actual fault you found?” Ask for it specifically — firmware, config, comms, hardware. If the answer involves anything they fixed on the equipment, then the equipment had a fault. That fault, not the correction service, is the leading suspect.
2. “Can we test the old subscription now that the fault is fixed?” This is the one that settles it. If the gear now works on the original correction service, the correction service was never the problem. It takes five minutes and changes one variable at a time — the same way you’d want any problem on your site diagnosed.
3. “Would this fix have worked without changing the subscription?” A fair technician will give you a straight answer. It’s a hard question to fudge, and it’s not a rude one to ask.
None of these questions are confrontational. They’re the questions any project manager would ask about a variation claim: what exactly was the problem, and what exactly fixed it?
Where we stand

In this industry, you’re only as good as the last time you told someone the truth when it cost you.
Because here’s the thing about relationships in surveying and civil: they’re the industry’s greatest strength, and trust is what makes them work. Trust should make the diagnosis more honest, not less questioned. The supplier relationships worth keeping are the ones that survive the question “can we test that?”
So keep your gear, keep your dealer, keep your technician’s number. Just keep one habit alongside them: when someone tells you the correction service is the problem, ask what the actual fault was — and ask to test it.
